Self-improvement culture has sold a convincing lie. That the highest goal of your life is to become the best possible version of yourself.
Optimize your morning routine, build your habits, read more books, get stronger, earn more, become more disciplined, more productive, more knowledgeable, more impressive…
None of those things are wrong in themselves. But they are not the point.
A man can become highly disciplined and spiritually weak. He can get stronger, smarter, and more productive while avoiding every responsibility God has already placed in front of him. He can spend years preparing for service he never actually renders.
A better man is not necessarily a faithful man.
The question is not merely whether you are improving. The question is what responsibility your improvement is helping you avoid.
What the Bible Says
Scripture does not command self-optimization. It commands faithful stewardship.
“And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and keep it.” Genesis 2:15.
Work and responsibility are not consequences of the Fall. Before sin entered the world, man was made to cultivate, build, keep, and serve. Dominion is the original design, not a self-improvement goal.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10.
You were not created to become the best version of yourself. You were created for good works God prepared in advance. Your growth is meant to be directed toward those works, not toward a private vision of personal excellence.
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24.
Every effort, every discipline, every skill is directed at Christ. Not at your self-image, not at your resume, but at him.
Jesus spent roughly thirty years in ordinary work before three years of public ministry. The Christian life is not measured by how impressive a man’s output looks.
Faithfulness can be hidden, ordinary, repetitive, and slow. I doubt God is impressed by your optimization but He is honored by your obedience.
The Trap I Fell Into
A few years back, I got deep into the productivity and self-help space. My goal was to find hacks and systems to make me as productive as possible. I wanted a promotion at my software job.
I had been at the company for a few years and was even the unofficial lead engineer for my team. I wrote version two of our search service, and it handled millions of visits per day without a hiccup. It was marvelous, and I felt I deserved the promotion and a raise.
It was for my family, of course. More money would mean a bigger house, a finished basement for the kids to run around in, maybe even a pool.
So I poured myself into every book that seemed like it could help me perform better. Books like Atomic Habits by James Clear, The Power of When by Michael Breus, and Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz.
I spent hours reading those books and many others. I watched YouTube for hacks people used to squeeze more out of every day. But it came at a cost. My spirit began to suffer because I was neglecting the words God recorded in Scripture. I was running on fumes instead of drinking the water of life.
This came crashing down when the promotion I was pushing for fell through. My boss was supportive. Maybe he felt bad for getting my hopes up. But after the promotion did not come, I burned out. It was so bad that I did the absolute minimum to keep my job. After a month or so, my boss came to me with concerns because I was not pulling my weight. My body and mind rejected doing anything more than what was required.
Around that time, my wife had our third son. I took time off to help her and did not think about work at all. I did not read self-help or productivity books.
I was still.
I started reading my Bible and theology books again. This restored my understanding of a correct work ethic, a biblical one, and renewed my mind. A hard lesson to learn, but I thank God that I have.
The Mission Audit
The Mission Audit is a simple exercise to examine whether your improvement is serving God’s mission or your ego. Do it honestly and it will reorient your growth.
Step 1: What Has God Already Entrusted to Me?
Before you chase a vision of who you want to become, take inventory of what you already have.
List your actual responsibilities such as your wife, your children, your local church, your vocation, your neighbors, your skills, your financial resources, your body and health, your opportunities to serve.
Do not list dreams.
Matthew 25:14-30 records Jesus telling the parable of the talents. The servants were judged not on what they could have done with more, but on what they did with what was entrusted to them. The faithful servant did not chase a different assignment. He was faithful with what was already in his hands.
Start there, your first mission is your current assignment.
Step 2: What Am I Improving, and Who Benefits?
This is where the audit gets uncomfortable.
Write down every area you are actively working on: fitness, income, business, knowledge, habits, spiritual disciplines, emotional control, technical skills, communication.
Does this serve my household, my church, my neighbor, or only my status and comfort?
Does my increased income make me more generous or merely more comfortable?
Does my discipline make me more dependable to the people who need me?
Does my knowledge help me serve or simply help me win arguments?
Does my fitness increase my capacity to work and protect my family?
Does my productivity make me more present with my wife and children, or less?
If your improvement only makes you more impressive to yourself, it is not growth.
“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31.
Every discipline, every skill, every habit is meant to pass through that filter. Does this glorify God by serving someone other than me?
A man who is getting stronger but not serving is just building a better idol.
Step 3: What Faithful Action Am I Avoiding?
Look at your list of current improvements. Now look at your list of entrusted responsibilities. Where is the gap? What faithful action are you delaying by keeping busy with self-improvement?
Sometimes the next step in your growth is not learning something new. It is becoming faithful with what is already in front of you.
David was anointed king as a teenager but spent years serving Saul, running from Saul, and waiting on God’s timing. He stayed faithful in the ordinary while God prepared him for the extraordinary.
Moses spent forty years tending sheep before God called him to lead Israel. Those were years of faithful stewardship in a small assignment. God used the ordinary work to shape a man who could carry an extraordinary calling.
Your avoidance of what’s in front of you in pursuit of productivity will look respectable. But God sees the heart, and he knows when your improvement is a smokescreen for disobedience.
Step 4: Redirect One Improvement Toward Service This Week
Pick one area where you are actively growing and find a way to serve God through it.
If you are building a stronger body, use that strength to serve someone. Such as carrying something heavy for a neighbor or playing with your kids until they are tired and you are not.
If you are growing in knowledge, teach someone. Disciple a younger man or help your wife understand something she has been struggling with.
If you are increasing your income, give more now not later. Make the increase serve the kingdom, not your comfort.
If you are building productivity systems, use them to create margin for your family and to be more present.
Step 5: Bring the Audit to Your Church
You were not designed to evaluate yourself in isolation. Bring your Mission Audit to your pastor, an elder, or a trusted brother in your local church. Ask him to look at your list of improvements and your list of responsibilities and tell you what he sees.
A man unaccountable is a man adrift. You will rationalize your avoidance if no one is allowed to name it.
“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.” Hebrews 13:17.
Your elders are watching for your soul. Let them do their job and bring them your audit and listen to what they say.
The Question That Matters
The self-improvement culture will keep telling you to become the best version of yourself. Scripture tells yout become faithful with what you have been given. Direct your strength toward service and aim your growth at obedience.
A better man is not necessarily a faithful man.
But a faithful man, by God’s grace, becomes exactly the man he was created to be.
So here is the question you need to answer.
What are you improving, and what responsibility is it helping you avoid?
Exactly what I needed to read! Thank you so much!
