The modern Christian man has a respectable addiction. It doesn’t look like pornography or laziness or greed.
It looks like productivity.
You reads another book, take another course, or build another spreadsheet. You plan, organize, and prepares for the day you will finally act.
But that day never comes.
Preparation has become one of the most socially acceptable forms of disobedience in the church. Men who would never skip Sunday worship quietly skip obedience Monday through Saturday.
Scripture calls this self-deception.
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” James 1:22
James isn’t condemning careful thought. He is condemning hearing that never becomes doing. When more information has stopped changing your next action, you’re only delaying.
The research feels productive. The planning feels responsible. But sometimes preparation is just a cleaner way to avoid the uncomfortable part.
Do the work.
A man can read three books on biblical fatherhood while never actually leading his children. He can plan a career change for eight years while refusing to make a decision. He can study prayer, discipline, and leadership while his responsibilities sit untouched in front of him.
Noah prepared for action, Nehemiah surveyed the walls before he rebuilt them, and Jesus withdrew to pray. But none of them used preparation as a substitute for obedience.
They prepared to act.
The Obedience-to-Action Test
Most of us already know what God requires of us. We don’t need another sermon before we can begin. We need a test that forces conviction to become action before the preparation instinct takes over.
Step 1: Name the command.
Write down the concrete action already required of you. Not a broad ambition. Not a life goal. A specific action that can be completed or observed.
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” Joshua 1:9
Joshua didn’t receive a vague sense of purpose. He received the command to cross the Jordan and to take the land. God gave him the action before He gave him the details of the strategy.
Write your command in one sentence:
Lead family worship tonight.
Have the hard conversation with my employee this week.
Stop looking at my phone after 9 p.m.
Tell the truth about the money.
Finish the work I promised to finish.
If you can’t write the action in one sentence, you may be hiding inside a fog of good intentions.
Step 2: Identify the missing information.
Ask yourself: What specific fact would actually change my next action?
This is where preparation often gets exposed. You say you need to learn more about family discipleship before you begin. What fact are you waiting for? What piece of information would change what you do tonight?
Sometimes there is a real answer. Get the information you need. But often the answer is nothing. You already know enough to open the Bible, read a chapter, pray, and put your children to bed.
Solomon wrote:
“The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.” Proverbs 22:13.
The lion is the excuse; the unfinished book, the podcast you haven’t heard, and the plan you haven’t perfected.
If you can name a genuine missing fact, go get it. If you can’t, stop pretending that more information is the problem.
Step 3: Set a short preparation limit.
Give yourself a boundary. Then stop preparing.
Nehemiah didn’t spend a year surveying Jerusalem’s walls. He rode out at night, inspected the damage, and returned with a plan.
“So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.” Nehemiah 2:11.
The man who had spent years serving as a cupbearer in Persia did not need years of additional planning. He needed a short inspection and the courage to begin.
Bound your preparation.
If you can’t finish the research within the time you’ve set, ask whether the task really requires more research. It may require courage instead.
Step 4: Obey before optimizing.
Do the smallest faithful version of the action today. Improve it after you have real experience.
Jesus said:
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.” Matthew 7:24.
Notice the order is hearing then doing. Not hearing and planning. Not hearing and optimizing. The wise man is not the man with the best blueprint.
He is the man who builds.
Your first family worship may be awkward. Your first hard conversation may be clumsy. Your first budget may have holes in it. Do it anyway.
A clumsy obedience is worth more than a polished intention. We can’t refine a process we have never executed. We can’t optimize what we have never done.
Do the thing then make it better.
Step 5: Review what obedience produced.
After you act, look at what happened. Did the action expose a real problem? Did you need more information after all? Did the task become easier once you started? What should you change before you repeat it?
This keeps preparation in its proper place. We don’t reject wisdom or planning. We put them under obedience.
The question isn’t whether preparation is good. The question is whether it is helping us obey or helping us feel like obedient men without actually doing anything.
The Tuesday Night Challenge
Tonight, before you go to bed, take out a piece of paper and write down one clear duty you already know God requires of you.
Then write down the preparation you’ve been using to delay it. Set a fifteen-minute limit. When the limit ends, take the next obedient action before your head hits the pillow.
If the action is a conversation, have it. If it’s a prayer, pray it. If it’s a decision, make it. If it’s a habit, start it.
If you do this tonight you are closer to biblical manhood than the man who spends six months building the perfect system.
Preparation is a servant, not a master. When it serves obedience, it is wisdom. When it replaces obedience, it becomes sin dressed in productivity clothing.

This is a great post! Men need to be leaders, but we have lost much of that, we need to lead the household by example, we have to lead physically, financially and spiritually. This can become tiring, and difficult, especially for those of us who grew up without a Father, but it is our role, and as you have stated, if we don't fight to be consistent and keep moving forward we won't grow, and our families will suffer as a result.
Let's fight to grow, let's set the boundaries for success on our bad days and push our limits and growth on the good ones. God will do the rest!
