Why ‘Being a Good Man’ Is Killing Christian Masculinity
The Counterfeit Virtue That’s Producing Passive Husbands and Absent Fathers
Modern society has sold Christian men a counterfeit. We’ve been told the goal is to “be a good man.” Good husband, father, church member, and employee. Just be good and keep the peace. Don’t make waves; just smile, nod, apologize, and move on.
That is not biblical Christianity but moral niceness. It is producing passive husbands, absent fathers, and men who haven’t confronted a real sin in their homes in years.
“Good” is not the standard. God never called you to be good. He called you to be holy.
When the rich young ruler called Jesus “good,” Jesus rebuked him.
”And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.” - Luke 18:19
Jesus refused the compliment. He redirected the man to the actual standard, which is God’s holiness, not human goodness.
The rich young ruler wanted to look good. He wanted to check the boxes and walk away righteous in his own eyes. Jesus wouldn’t let him, He exposed the man’s idolatry in one sentence: sell all you have, give to the poor, and follow me. The man walked away grieving because he was “good” by the culture’s standard but not holy by God’s.
This is exactly where many Christian men are living. You’re holding it together at work. You’re not cheating on your wife. You’re not screaming at your kids. You’re showing up to church most Sundays. By every cultural measure, you’re a good man.
And you’re dying inside because “good” was never the call.
The Cost of the Counterfeit
The “good man” lie costs you everything that matters. It costs your marriage, because a man who won’t confront sin in his home leaves his wife to carry burdens she was never meant to carry. It costs your children, because they learn from your passivity that truth is negotiable and courage is optional. It costs your church, because men who won’t stand on truth leave the body vulnerable to every wind of false teaching that blows through the doors.
Ultimately, it costs your soul. You know something is wrong. It’s the nagging sense that you were made for more than this. The quiet conviction that God didn’t save you to be pleasant.
King Saul was a “good man” by every external measure. He looked the part. He stood head and shoulders above the people. He wanted to look good before them, and when Samuel confronted his disobedience, Saul admitted it.
”I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people.” 1 Samuel 15:30
David was not a “good man.” He was an adulterer and a murderer. But he was a man after God’s own heart, because when Nathan confronted him, he didn’t manage his image. He didn’t spin it. He said,
”I have sinned against the LORD.” 2 Samuel 12:13.
No excuses or damage control, just repentance.
That is the difference between good and holy. Good manages appearances but holy obeys God.
What Scripture Actually Says
Paul didn’t write to the Corinthian church and say, “Be good boys.” He said,
”Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13
That is not the language of moral niceness. That is the language of warfare.
Peter wrote, ”Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” in 1 Peter 1:16. He was quoting Leviticus, where God repeatedly tells Israel to be holy as He is holy. The word holy means set apart.
Different from the culture around you. Not nicer than the culture or more polite. But set apart by allegiance to God’s truth.
Holiness requires confrontation and courage. It requires standing on truth even when it costs you the easy peace.
I know this from personal experience.
Early in my marriage, I bought into the “happy wife, happy life” thing the culture pushes. Thought being a good husband meant keeping my wife happy. When she was upset, I’d apologize for whatever she was complaining about and move on. Didn’t matter if I was actually wrong because the goal was peace.
But that was cowardice.
Now, when I know I’m right from a biblical stance, I stand my ground. I won’t just apologize to keep the peace. But if I sinned at any point in the process, I ask her forgiveness for the actual sin.
To be clear, this isn’t always the thing she was initially upset about. “Good” meant keeping everyone happy. “Holy” means standing for truth even when it costs you the easy peace.
I didn’t know any of this when I got married. I had my first kid and realized I had no idea what it meant to be a biblical man. Nobody in the church ever told me. It wasn’t that the teaching was wrong but that it wasn’t there.
So I started studying and I realized other men were asking the same questions. That’s why I started this newsletter.
Knowing the problem isn’t enough. Conviction fades by Thursday if you don’t act on it today. You need a plan you can run this week, not next month.
The Holiness Reset
This is a five-step process to replace moral niceness with biblical holiness. A plan you can run this week.
Step 1: Name the “good man” lie you’ve believed.
Sit down with a notebook and write:
Where have you confused being nice with being godly?
Where have you chosen comfort over confrontation because “a good man doesn’t make waves”?
Name the specific conversations you’ve avoided. Name the sins you’ve tolerated in your home. Name the truths you’ve softened to keep the peace.
This step will take you further than most men go in a full year. Most Christian men never stop to examine what standard they’re actually living by. They assume they’re following Scripture when they’re actually following the culture.
Step 2: Replace “good” with “holy.”
Biblical holiness for a man means this: you are set apart by God, living by His standard, and willing to confront sin in your home, your church, and your own heart. Holiness is not niceness. It is allegiance to God’s truth over cultural expectations.
Moses was not a “good man” when he confronted Pharaoh. He was a holy man obeying God. Joshua was not being “nice” when he told Israel to choose this day whom they would serve. He was calling them to covenant faithfulness. Paul was not making friends when he opposed Peter to his face over hypocrisy in Galatians 2. He was defending the truth of the gospel.
Holiness will make you unpopular with people who want you to conform to the culture. Rejoice because that is a sign you’re doing it right.
Step 3: Identify where you’ve chosen comfort over confrontation.
Pick one.
The conversation you’ve been avoiding with your wife.
The sin in your son’s life you’ve been pretending isn’t there.
The false teaching in your church you’ve let slide because you don’t want to be “that guy.”
The truth you’ve softened with a coworker who needed to hear it straight.
Write it down and be specific.
Step 4: Build one act of dangerous obedience this week.
Speak the truth and stand firm when it costs you. One concrete action.
This is where the Holiness Reset lives or dies. Steps 1 through 3 are preparation. If you stop at Step 3, you’ve just done a Bible study on holiness. If you take this step, you’ve actually started becoming holy.
Peter didn’t become a pillar of the church by thinking about courage. He preached at Pentecost, he stood before the Sanhedrin, he let himself be arrested and beaten and said it was an honor to suffer for the name.
Your one act of dangerous obedience this week won’t look like Peter’s. It will look like you, in your life, with your people, choosing God’s truth over the easy peace.

Step 5: Anchor to a man who’ll hold you to holiness, not niceness.
Find one man who won’t let you settle for “good.” Not a yes-man or a buddy who says you’re doing fine. A brother who calls you to the biblical standard and asks you hard questions.
This is why the local church matters. A man unaccountable to his local church is a man adrift. You need elders who will challenge you. You need brothers in the body who know you well enough to see when you’re hiding behind “good” and call you up to holy.
If you don’t have this man in your life, finding him is your first act of dangerous obedience. Go to your pastor or an elder this Sunday and ask him to hold you accountable. Tell him you’ve been living for “good” instead of “holy” and you need help changing course.
That conversation will feel like death but it is the beginning of life.
The Standard Was Never “Good”
The rich young ruler walked away from Jesus because “good” wasn’t enough and he knew it. He had kept the commandments his whole life. He had done everything right by the culture’s standard. And Jesus asked him for the one thing he wouldn’t give: everything.
God is not asking you to be a good man. He is asking you to be a holy man. Set apart and consecrated. Willing to confront, willing to stand, willing to obey when it costs you the easy peace.
The question is not whether you’re a good husband, a good father, a good worker. The question is whether you are holy.
