The church sold Christian men a rescue plan disguised as the Gospel.
Get saved then wait for the escape.
That is the fruit of pre-tribulation rapture theology, and it has produced a generation of men who walked through the door of salvation and then stood in the hallway for decades.
I know because I was one of them.
I got saved young, drifted, and then came back in my late twenties. I picked up the thinking that all there is to Christianity is to get saved, sit around, and then wait.
I Went to church, worked my job to make money, and shared the gospel when the opportunity arose. This is essentially sitting around and waiting. After a few years in, I looked at my life and realized the mentality wasn’t producing any fruit for the Kingdom. I was not building any to advance the Kindom I’m part of. I was a man with skills, a trade, ideas, energy, and I was treating all of it as secular leftovers with no Kingdom value.
This is not a minor doctrinal quibble. Jesus said you know a tree by its fruit in Matthew 7:20.
Apply that test to the escapist eschatology and what does it actually produce Passivity. And a faith that evacuates instead of inhabits. Men who “got saved” and never built anything.
Salvation is the door we walk through, not the finish line. After the door, the rest of life is for building the Kingdom with Christ as His body. Paul said it plainly:
“For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9).
Every man’s work will be tested by fire. Gold, silver, precious stones. Or wood, hay, stubble. Building quality matters.
The Master in Matthew 25 didn’t commend the servant who buried his talent and waited.
He called him wicked.
He commended the ones who increased what was entrusted to them (Luke 12:43). Faithful means you are found working and not found watching.
The Builder’s Mandate
Step 1: Fix Your Eschatology
Stop reading Scripture as an escape hatch. Christ’s return is the reason to build, not the excuse to wait. The Great Commission is not “collect decisions and hold on.”
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20).
That’s a multi-generation building command. Disciple nations. Not individuals. Nations.
Postmillennialism isn’t optimism. It’s obedience. Christ said all authority in heaven and earth is His. He said He would be with us to the end of the age. He told us to get to work. The question is not whether He’s coming back. He is. The question is what He finds us doing when He does.
Step 2: Identify Your Parcel
Name the domain God actually put in your hands. Your family. Your trade. Your skills. Your side work. Your church. Your neighborhood. That’s your building site. Nehemiah didn’t try to rebuild the whole empire. He rebuilt the wall in front of him. Noah didn’t try to save the world. He built the ark. Solomon built the house of the LORD with the resources and wisdom God gave him.
Stop looking for a grander assignment. The parcel in front of you is the assignment. A man who won’t build where he is won’t build anywhere.
Write it down. One sentence. “God has entrusted me with ___.” If you can’t fill in the blank, you haven’t taken inventory. Take inventory this week. If you don’t know where to start, the Stoic Christian Toolkit has frameworks for exactly this kind of inventory work. Don’t let not knowing how be the excuse that keeps you waiting.
Step 3: Reframe Your Work as Kingdom Work
Your job is not a secular leftover. Your side projects are not throwaway hobbies. Your ideas are not distractions from “real ministry.” Paul says every man’s work will be tried by fire.
“If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire” (1 Corinthians 3:14-15).
The foundation is Christ. What you build on it determines whether it lasts. A software engineer writing clean code that serves his family and his church is building gold. A father teaching his sons to work and worship is laying precious stones. A man starting a business that funds Kingdom work is not doing secular work. He’s doing the work.
I still work my job. I still share the gospel. But everything I build is reframed. Side projects, ideas, work for my family, all of it is for Christ and the advancement of His Kingdom. Preaching the gospel is the first step through the door: bringing people in so their God-given skills join Christ’s body and do the work He said His body would do.
The mindset shift brought a joy I never had while waiting around.
Step 4: Build for Generations, Not for Escape
Escape theology produces men who think in terms of the next ten years, maybe. Build theology produces men who think in terms of the next ten generations. Noah built for decades something that looked absurd to everyone watching. Nehemiah rebuilt a wall his generation would defend and the next generation would inhabit.
Disciple your children. Plan beyond your own lifetime. Think in decades. Write down what you want your great-grandchildren to know about your faith. Then start building toward it. A man with no generational vision is a man building with wood, hay, and stubble. It burns. A man who builds for his children’s children is stacking gold.
Step 5: Stay Found Doing
Keep sharing the gospel. That’s the door. But don’t stop at the door. Bring people through it and into the work of the body. “Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing” (Luke 12:43).
The servant who was found doing was the one who was faithful with what was entrusted to him while the Master was away. He wasn’t staring at the road. He wasn’t speculating about the timetable. He was working. The wicked servant in Matthew 25 was the one who said, “My lord delayeth his coming” and buried the talent.
Be the servant the Master finds so doing. Working. Building. Providing. Leading. Discipling. Sharing the gospel and then showing the saved what to do next.
The Cost of the Hallway
The church lied to men. Not maliciously, but effectively. We were told the Christian life was: get saved, stay pure, wait for the rapture. That’s a hallway theology. It produces hallway men. Men standing around, watching the sky, letting all of creation go to hell in a handbasket while they hold their ticket.
Christ will return. The Kingdom’s work will be there in its fullness. But between now and then, you have a parcel, a foundation, and a mandate.
