I was reading a post on
where the author wrote:I think Gab is struggling for air these days. People are tired and weary. People need the joy of the LORD!
I feel this as well.
Gab is a great alternative to Facebook and
recent Notes feature is a great alternative to Twitter. But what we want to be careful of is turning our feeds into doom and gloom. This is where those on Gab are gasping for air.
If you simply go to the “discover” page, it will often meet you with nothing more than how bad the situation looks.
We need to fill these places with Christ. He is our King, and we are to take dominion for His kingdom until He returns.
This is true for physical spaces and digital ones.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. [Matthew 28:19-20 KJV]
Acting like God did not know these would exist, and therefore, ignoring the great commission in these spaces violates God’s sovereignty.
Curate Your Feeds
So we need to curate our feeds and do so often.
We need to pay attention to what we like, comment on, and share. Because most social networks use these data points to feed us more content so we stay on their app longer.
If we are interacting with sinful material or material that tempts us to sin, we are telling these platforms that we want to see more of that content. This also goes for content that is not explicitly edifying or Christian.
Yes, I know this sounds drastic, but it’s a starting place to get your social feeds back to a God honoring state. Does this mean that every account you follow has to be about theology?
No, there are plenty of accounts out there run by Christians on many topics.
So find them, follow them, and support them.
Conquer Your Feeds
It may feel like these feeds are pushing trash down your throat. This is where you must take responsibility and conquer the feed.
Take time and seek accounts that honor the true and living God. Find accounts that will teach you about King Jesus, God the Father, and the Holy Ghost.
Accounts that will stretch your understanding of theology and cause you to meditate on God’s word. We need accounts that are explicitly Christian and teaching (or at least sharing) what they know about some theological topic.
But you should also find accounts run by our brothers in Christ who have a mission outside of explicit theology.
As I have mentioned somewhere in the past, no matter what your skill is, you can do it as if you are doing it for our King, Jesus Christ.
The same goes for content creators on social media.
Enter the Battle!
We need more Christ centered content in the social media landscape. You likely have a passion and, hopefully, are a Christian.
So start making content around your God-given talents in a God fearing way. Remember, you don’t have to be a theologian to create Christian content.
Much like a plumber who is doing his work as unto the Lord, so you can create content for others in a manner that is pleasing to God.
The reason I mentioned your passion and the talents God gave you in the same light is because when these two (seemingly) separate spheres collide, you get something very interesting.
You get the motivation to create no matter who follows, listens, or watches. This motivation comes because not only is it something you enjoy talking about but also is easy to spend time learn more about.
3 Steps To Social Media That Won’t Starve Your Spirit:
1. Unfollow Any Female That Posts Photos of Herself in Little to No Clothing.
Since this is a blog focused on men, I assume you’re a man and if so, images fuel your sexual drive.
Even if the person is a relative of yours, rip them out of your feed.
Your will power to resist sin is only so large and it’s better to follow Christ’s command and get ride of anything that causes you to sin.
And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. [Matthew 5:30 KJV]
2. Stop Interacting With Anything That Does Not Edify
Next, be mindful about what you “like”, comment on, and share with others.
Ask yourself, did this edify me? If this is not an easy “yes” let it pass no matter how much you may actually like it.
If you liked in and realize it’s not something which should exist in a God honoring feed, “unlike” it.
We are trying to fix your social media feeds, and drastic measures are required.
3. Start Following Christ Honoring Accounts
You have to follow accounts which will feed your spirit in order to interact with such content.
A great way to do this is to find accounts by Christians you already know, such as a pastor or theologian, and look at who they currently follow.
Then just follow accounts they follow that look interesting to you.
If later you find you don’t care for their content, you can always unfollow them.
